Felled giant, united in death.

Giant trees, broken like matchsticks, lying on the ground, uprooted, fragmented, deprived of their power. Large dead animals with guts of wood and earth. But even at the moment of her death with a distinctive beauty and almost graphic aesthetics. Peaceful lying on the grass, clutching, knotted, supported each other.

"Ela" means in addition to mourning the dead in NRW, inter alia, even tens of millions of property damage and more than 80,000 damaged trees in North Rhine-Westphalia. In Dusseldorf alone is concerned, every fourth tree, especially sycamores and poplars had suffered serverely. One can such forces of nature objectively. As an artist and photographer, I was trying to work out the specific "aesthetics of horror". The very next morning after that fateful night, I faced up to the desaster for three days. Quite often, I found myself with this topic in critical situations dangerous to life, when branches were dashing down from trees.

At viewing this I floated between bewilderment and sorrow, disbelief and amazement. The result is a series of about 80 photographs: pictures of the recapture of urban space by the unbridled forces of nature. The difference to other photographs is a special exposure technique and the angle of vision: the effect of disturbing images is often enhanced by the trivializing blue sky and sunshine, which is almost counteracting that night and the storm’s mighty horror. The images were created in a special colour technology created by myself which – however – can partly be controlled and requires some experience, but thereby, each motive gets the status of an unpredictable unique. By this technique the effect is more stressed, and it emphasizes the noteworthy aesthetic power.

The pictures make tongue-tied, they cry for help, and mediate the extent of devastation in a completely different, unnatural and nearly like a postcard idyll artificial way (compared to the common classic documentary point of view).
